This catalogue should be of interest to collectors of Victorian
GB stamps and postmarks, containing not only historic pricing, but
including interesting notes on a variety of specialisms, plus many
illustrations.
It covers all GB stamp issues, their errors and varieties up to
the date of publishing, including telegraph stamps, officials, and
´specimen´ stamps. Further interesting sections include:
Oxford Union Society
overprints on 1d reds (with a list of plate numbers on which they are
found); stamps with underprints of
firms names, chiefly Messrs Copestake, Moore,
Crampton & Co and Messrs J Boyd (a complete list with plate
numbers); priced lists of ´control´
or ´account´ numbers of the ½d vermillion and 1d
lilac; prices of stamps of original envelopes &
letter sheets; the four varieties of
the ´emblems´ watermark - diagram of sheet
positions of the varieties in the 1865
issue.
Moving on to postmarks, there are useful illustrations,
background and pricing given for the types & colours of
Maltese Crosses, and
principle types of numbered obliterations. Separate lists of the
numbered obliterations of British
Post Offices in colonies & foreign countries
are given, followed by lengthy country by country pricing of the
different stamp values found bearing these cancellations, with
illustrations. There are also priced sections on
Army POs, Sea POs, and English stamps
bearing foreign
postmarks. There are also a few pages of period
advertisements at the rear, including those for philatelic
literature published at the time.
